Hey All,
We’re sliding into the end of the year… and I am not ready for it. I really wish I could squeeze in an extra month, just to chill, catch up on reading and watching movies… but, alas… I don’t get to make the calendar. Not yet.
In the meantime, here’s the last newsletter of the year…
News
The Independent Fiction Alliances placed Big F@!king Deal — the 2nd book in the Jimmy Cooper Mysteries — on the list of the Best of Independent Books of 2023!
I’m not crying, you’re crying!
This feels so good. It’s an incredible honor because there are so many outstanding books out there and it’s the first time I’ve had a book on a Best Of list.
If you want to see the other ones — and maybe buy one or two — you can check out the rest HERE.
The gift-giving season is here and — being totally biased — what better gift than a book…or three?
Appearances
The Author Wheel Podcast invited me over for a little chat. And by “invited me over,” I mean, over Zoom. We talked about the challenges (and the joys) I faced moving from playwriting/screenwriting into writing novels and what I learned along the way.
Below is a brief sample…

Book Recommendations
So MANY recommendations…! It’s the yearly round up of the books I’ve recommended in the past year.
Some are classics, a couple dip into sci-fi, but many of them are by new authors that just might become your new favorites.
Click on the links below to head over to the original post to read my thoughts on these fab books.
She Rides Shotgun by Jordan Harper
Something More Than Night by Kim Newman
This Year You Write Your Novel by Walter Mosely
In A Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes
Burying the Newspaper Man by Curtis Ippolito
The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Her Dying Day by Mindy Carlson
Finally…
That’s it for 2023. Right now, I’m trying to accept the reality that I will not get as much writing done in the next few weeks. But that’s true most days: I never get as much writing done as I’d like.
And 2024 promises to be a busy year. I’m working on the 3rd Jimmy Cooper book right now, I have plans to start another series, and finally, there might be a novella or two… And let’s not forget the book conferences I’ll be attending! (Left Coast Crime and Bouchercon are already on the list, and I’m looking at a couple more.)
Is it any wonder I get as much done as I’d like?
Until 2024… take care, y’all.
